Spider webs can be found in almost every imaginable place - even underwater - and have allowed spiders to populate every continent except frigid Antarctica. Indeed, the spider’s evolution into some 40,000 known species coincides with the diversification of silk and what that’s allowed in web designs, each type enabling a species to exploit a new ecological niche. A spider achieves these dualities by spinning with different types of silk, which emerge from silk glands in its abdomen by way of the spinnerets. They live on the ground, in tree bark crevices, or palm tree tops. One of the most common Florida spiders is the Jumping spider with 95 species coming in many different sizes and colors. Many spiders do not spin webs, but have mastered being able to choose places that allow them to attack their prey, like tops of shrubs and flowers where they can then jump upon their prey. They usually have eight eyes and eight legs, with two small leg like “palps” on either side of its jaw that assist with holding its food. Spiders have two main body parts, the head and body and have a hard exoskeleton. The State of Florida is estimated to be home to over 900 different species of spiders. There are many different spider types living here, from the well known cob web builders, jumping spiders, ground spiders, and even fishing spiders. Can you guess? It’s the Arachnid or spider. The Golden Silk Spider is the largest spider in Florida.One of the smallest creatures to call the Bonita Nature Place home are the ones who do get the biggest screams from some of our visitors.
